[Midjourney Guide] How to Use a Seed in Midjourney to Generate Consistent Images?
Updated on
Summary: Midjourney seed plays a great role in the image results. Follow the page and learn what is Midjourney Seed, how to get and use a seed value in Midjourney to add a little more consistency to your generated images.
Have you ever encountered a situation like this? You input a prompt in Midjourney, and it generates 4 images. You review the 4 images and find one that's great, but the others are not quite what you had in mind. So you modify the prompt a little. This time, Midjourney generates some more images but are totally different, which frustrates you. Then you wonder why you cannot just modify the images from the first batch instead.
The inconsistency is down to the random elements used by Midjourney during image generation. Luckily, Midjourney seed comes to the rescue, a feature that allows to lock the core elements of the existing image. This ensures that the content generated from the base image doesn't change too much. In this section, you will know what is Midjourney seed, how to use a seed in Midjourney to craft consistent characters as below.
- Use short or medium-length prompts: In my tests I found that the seed strategy is most effective with short to medium-length prompts. Extremely short prompts may yield unpredictable results.
- Experimentation: Change or add one or two words at a time when tuning your prompt with the seed.
- Consider image prompt: You can use an image prompt combined with the specific prompts and seed to maintain consistency when creating a series of images.
Part 1. What Is Seed in Midjourney? Why It Is Important?
Midjourney employs a seed number to generate a field of visual noise, like television static. This serves as the starting point of the image generation process. Seed numbers are randomly generated for each image creation instance. The seed values in Midjourney can be any whole number between 0 and 4294967295. You can specify them using the --seed parameter from previous versions. By specifying a seed number, you can ensure that Midjourney like V4, V5, or V6 generates nearly identical images when you use the same prompt multiple times. Midjourney Seed is important for several reasons:
- Consistency: Midjourney Seed allows to achieve consistent results when using the same prompt multiple times. This is crucial for creating cohesive image sets like branded campaigns or character development.
- Control: By specifying a seed, Midjourney gives you more control over the desired style and composition. You can therefore create a specific artistic vision for your project.
- Exploration: Seed enables you to explore variations of a prompt by making small adjustments to the seed value. This can lead to unexpected and creative results.
Part 2. How to Get Seed Number in Midjourney?
Step 1. Use the prompts to generate an initial image of the character you have in mind.
Here are the original prompts I used:
💬 Blind box style, Cute little girl with rabbit ears hat, Full body, Look at the camera, Pop mart, octane rendering, ultra details, edgelighting, chibi, The best quality, HD, C4D, chiaroscuro, 8K
Step 2. Choose the image (U3) you generated in step 1 as the base image for further modifications, and copy the URL.
Step 3. Click on the emoji icon in the top right corner of the generated four-grid interface.
Step 4. Enter: envelope, and find the envelope icon, click on it.
Step 5. Then you will receive a message from the Midjourney Bot in your direct message. Open the message and you will receive the seed value. Copy the seed value of the image.
Part 3. How to Use a Seed in Midjourney
Midjourney's --seed parameter lets you control image similarity across prompts. If you want to generate similar images between prompts, simply add "-- seed value" to the end of your prompt. To control the consistency of the character, here is the universal formula: replace keywords + seed value.
Step 1. Get the seed value following the above-mentioned steps. Or you can pick any number between 0 and 4294967295. Please do use whole numbers instead of any decimal value, which will make your seed number invalid.
Step 2. Modify your prompts, and add the seed value at the end.
In this section, we change the portion of the prompts from “rabbit ears hat”to “cat ears hat”, and add --seed 3476978698 at the end. Here is the revamped prompts with seed value:
💬 Blind box style, Cute little girl with cat ears hat, Full body, Look at the camera, Pop mart, octane rendering, ultra details, edgelighting, chibi, The best quality, HD, C4D, chiaroscuro, 8K --seed 3476978698
Step 3. Finally, we got the similar images. Here is the case:
Original prompts:
💬 Blind box style, Cute little girl with rabbit ears hat, Full body, Look at the camera, Pop mart, octane rendering, ultra details, edgelighting, chibi, The best quality, HD, C4D, chiaroscuro, 8K
New prompts 1:
💬 Blind box style, Cute little girl with cat ears hat, Full body, Look at the camera, Pop mart, octane rendering, ultra details, edgelighting, chibi, The best quality, HD, C4D, chiaroscuro, 8K --seed 3476978698
New prompts 2:
💬 Blind box style, Cute little girl with cat ears hat, side profile shot,Full body, Pop mart, octane rendering, ultra details, edgelighting, chibi, The best quality, HD, C4D, chiaroscuro, 8K --seed 3476978698
The results:
Below are the generated images (the left one is the original image, and the right ones are the images generated using the seed with minor change of prompts). As you can see, the ears have changed, but the character remains almost the same. You can do more tests and adjustments of the prompts to get a series of images.
Seed value impact varies across Midjourney models. In Model Versions 1, 2, 3, test, and testp, images will be created with similar composition, color, and details when using the same --seed values. In Model Versions 4, 5, 6, and niji, images generated will be nearly identical when using the same --seed values. So make sure the use the same model version.
Part 4. Upscale a Series of Midjourney Images in Batch with Details
Midjourney’s Seed delivers consistent results, but the resolution of the outputs is capped at 1024k. You can upscale the image to 2048p with options like Subtle or Creative Upscale, but it appears blurry especially when zoomed in. Check the details of eyes enlarged by Midjourney below.
If you want to upscale them to 2048p, 4K, or even higher resolution with crisper sharpness and realistic detail and don’t want to waste time and fast GPU hours upscaling them one by one, especially when you’ve generated a large collection of images, why not resorting to a professional AI image enhancer such as Aiarty Image Enhancer to deblur and upscale Midjourney images to higher quality in batch.
Why Aiarty Image Enhancer?
- Upscale image to 4k while filling missing pixels with more detail.
- Auto infer, deblur, denoise, generate details, and upscale image.
- Batch process supported. 6.78 million images trained.
- 2 mins only to upscale 100 images from 1024p to 2048p.
Just drag and drop the image series after you download and launch Aiarty Image Enhancer, choose the AI model and scale option as per your needs, wait for auto inference, and enhance the image automatically.
As you can see from below, the image upscaled by Aiarty is clearer even when zoomed in by 300%. There is no pixilation but more realistic details generated.
That's the tutorial on how to get and use the Seed value in Midjourney. Whether you are an experienced Midjourney user or just beginning to explore this field, understanding and mastering the use of Seed values will open up new possibilities and opportunities for you. Don't hesitate, start experimenting with Seed values now, and explore the infinite possibilities brought by Midjourney!
Part 5. FAQ about Midjourney Seed
When using the seed parameter to specify a seed value, it specifies the starting point for generated images in Midjourney. Using the same prompts and seed numbers will create duplicate or highly similar images. With the same seed number, but fine-tuning the prompts, a slight adjustment effect will be applied to the generated images.
No, reusing the same seed numbers in Midjourney still generate an entirely new image from the scratch. Therefore, it will consume Midjourney GPU hours. Only when you use the Relax mode can you avoid using up the GPU hours.
