Image Matting

1. Can I use Aiarty Image Matting on my computer?

Aiarty Image Matting is a user-friendly desktop application compatible with both Windows and Mac, making it accessible for users of all skill levels. This application can remove background from images by utilizing both CPU and GPU processing, even on computers with moderate specifications. However, for optimal performance and stability during image matting, we recommend using a higher-end computer. Please refer to the minimum system requirements to ensure compatibility with Aiarty Image Matting.

2. Why isn't GPU mode working for background removal, and what can I do to fix it?

The GPU mode may not work for background removal due to the two main reasons:

Detected by the software:

Not detected by the software (usually due to an older graphics card):

The speed of CPU-based background removal is also tied to overall performance. For example, an Intel i7-13700K processor may take around 10 seconds for inference during background removal.

3. Which AI model should I use for my image matting?

Aiarty Image Matting offers 4 dedicated AI models for image matting: AlphaStandard V2, AlphaEdge V2, EdgeClear V2, and SolidMat V2.

4. What image formats does Aiarty Image Matting support?

Aiarty Image Matting supports a wide range of popular image formats.

5. Are there any limits on file size or number of images I can import?

There are no file size limits for image imports, but there is a resolution limit - up to 10,000 pixels per side. Aiarty Image Matting supports batch processing of up to 3,000 images in one session. However, the actual number may vary based on your system’s available memory, as each image uses memory for thumbnails, settings, etc.

6. Why is the output only available in PNG and not JPG?

Because PNG supports transparency through an alpha channel, allowing for clear or partially transparent backgrounds - essential for images like overlays or matting. JPG, however, only supports opaque RGB channels, so it can't handle transparency. While JPG is great for photos and complex images with subtle color gradients, it isn't suitable for cases where a transparent background is needed. PNG is the preferred choice here to ensure high-quality, flexible outputs that meet transparency requirements.

7. Can I use AI detection and manual selection together?

Yes. You can use AI detection and manual selection together or separately. AI detection is primarily for quickly selecting similar items in bulk, while manual selection allows precise control over the matting area. However, combining these two can make the process more complex, as they may affect each other. For the best results, it's recommended to use them separately.

8. How can I specify the subject when there are multiple people or objects in my photo?

In such cases, try using the selection tool and keep the selection area as tight as possible. If it still captures surrounding elements, you can adjust using the Balance Brightness setting. Alternatively, you can use the Crop function to refine the area further.

9. What should I do to further improve edge clarity for hair, transparent objects, and fine details?

Enabling the feathering effect allows the edges of the matting to blend more naturally with the background by softening any harsh lines, which can be especially useful for creating seamless transitions. This effect is ideal for images where a smoother edge is desired, such as portraits or product photos against new backgrounds.

10. How can I compare two background removal results?

Each export generates a record in the export history. You can preview different matting settings in real time by clicking on these entries in history. Additionally, Aiarty Image Matting caches each matting. If you remove the background without Smooth Processing enabled, then apply Smooth Processing and remove background again, you can switch back and forth without reprocessing. The software will simply load the cached versions, allowing for instant comparisons.
